Why Hotmail Is Still Great

Hotmail has been around since 1996, which means that some users will have E-mail that's two decades old in their inbox. Back when Hotmail began you couldn't store your sent E-mails so users had to CC themselves on E-mails in order to keep their sent items. Things have changed a lot since those early days. When Hotmail was sold to Microsoft for a reported $400 million in 1997 it quickly became the world's largest webmail service with 30 million users less than a year after Microsoft bought out the firm. By 2012, the hotmail.com domain had been replaced by outlook.com but users could choose to retain the original Hotmail accounts.
Hotmail Inbox
Although it's called outlook.com, you can still type in hotmail.com as the URL and get to your webmail. One of the best features of the inbox is that it splits your Emails into 'Focused' and 'Other'. The focused E-mails are the most important messages in your inbox. You'll find correspondence from friends and colleagues there. The other part of the inbox contains general E-mails. Think of those messages as the equivalent of the bills and flyers that come through your door, while the focused messages are any letters and postcards you get.
How to Create a New Hotmail Account
If you don't already have a Hotmail account, you can get one within a few minutes. As with most webmail services, to set up an account you head to the sign-up page and select 'No account? Create one.' You'll be transferred to a form which asks you to choose the E-mail address you'd like, which can be either hotmail.com or outlook.com, and then you create a password. To complete, click 'Next' which automatically signs you up to the Microsoft Services Agreement and confirms that you agree with the firm's privacy and cookies policies.
OneDrive
One of the other features worth noting is OneDrive that allows users to send a link to a file rather than attach a copy of the document. If you'd like to send a document that you only want the recipient to view rather than amend, you can set that parameter through OneDrive. This tool is particularly useful when you need to send a file that's over the 10Mb limit imposed by Microsoft as OneDrive files can be up to 300Gb.
Connecting Accounts
Did you realize that you can connect different webmail accounts to outlook.com? That way you can view your Gmail or another account through the site. You can add up to 20 accounts, which must be more than enough for most users. The other feature that helps you to manage your E-mails is the Aliases tool. This allows you to have multiple E-mail addresses to keep apart different kinds of mail but without the hassle of opening up a Gmail or something similar. You'll need to go to 'Settings' and then 'Connected accounts' to access both of these features.
Keyboard Shortcuts
As with other Microsoft programs you can use keyboard shortcuts to speed up your access to Hotmail's features. Pressing 'N' starts a new message. When you're in a message and you highlight a word or phrase, press 'Ctrl' + 'B' and the highlighted work will be bold. Pressing 'Ctrl' + '2' brings you directly to the calendar. Be careful not to press 'Escape' when writing a message as that will close the E-mail down.
Premium Outlook
Users can opt for Premium Outlook, which is a paid service that removes the adverts and adds additional features. It's not expensive at less than twenty dollars a year but is it worth investing in? Most of us are just fine with free E-mail but Microsoft truly believes that the features like custom E-mail domains will attract users. This feature allows users to change their Outlook accounts to something like 'michael@wallfamily.org' as Microsoft noted in their publicity for the product. If a group of you share a domain name, you can easily share calendars, contacts, and documents as sharing relationships are set up automatically between people in the group. You'll have to decide for yourself if these features are worth paying an annual fee for.
